Want to bet on whether Drew Brees will stand for the national anthem when the Saints travel to Tampa Bay for their season opener on September 13? Thanks to sites like MyBookie and Sports Betting Dime, now you can.
As you may have noticed, roughly half the articles we’ve posted at RADIO.COM over the past week have been devoted to Brees and the controversy surrounding his comments to Yahoo Sports, maintaining that he would “never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States.” Brees has since backed off those remarks in rather emphatic fashion, even pushing back on President Trump, who didn’t think the quarterback needed to apologize in the first place.
As you might imagine, betting sites are bullish on Brees standing for the anthem with Sports Betting Dime setting the odds at -900 (translation: you’d have to bet $900 to win $100). At SBD, you can also bet on Brees to kneel (+500), place a hand on a teammate’s shoulder (-155) or neither (+115). MyBookie is also taking Brees props, according to TMZ, handicapping his odds of kneeling at +300 (-700 for standing).
The NFL banned kneeling for the national anthem in 2018, two years after Colin Kaepernick began the practice as a way of protesting racial injustice in the United States. However, Washington Redskins veteran Adrian Peterson said Friday he and others will soon resume kneeling in support of George Floyd and other victims of police brutality and systemic racism. While Brees has vowed to be more cognizant of the challenges African Americans face while acknowledging the right to protest, the former Super Bowl MVP has made no mention of his plans to stand or kneel during the national anthem this upcoming season.
