It appears increasingly likely that the Washington NFL franchise will change their nickname. We don't yet know what names the organization is weighing for the switch, but got an important clue Wednesday afternoon.
ESPN's Adam Schefter says that "Washington is planning to have no Native American imagery" with a new name, which leads you to think that the name won't have anything to do with Native Americans. ESPN NFL Nation reporter John Keim added that the team intends to stick with their burgundy and gold color scheme.
After stadium sponsor FedEx requested the team change their nickname last week and Nike became the first of many apparel providers to stop selling team merchandise, owner Daniel Synder and head coach Ron Rivera announced last week that the team was reviewing their possibilities.
Though there's not an exact timetable for the team to change their nickname, Rivera, entering his first season as the team's head coach, said it would be "great" to have a new name in place before the start of the 2020 season.
