Now this is a hockey matchup we've been waiting a long time to see. In the midst of one of the craziest eras in sports history, the need for sports to go virtual has finally brought us an NHL showdown between two of the greatest scorers in history.
In a press release shared by the Washington Capitals, team captain Alex Ovechkin will go head-to-head with Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky in a contest played on NHL 20. The best-of-three tournament, tagged as The Great One vs. The Great Eight Showcase will be streamed live on the Capitals' Twitch channel on Wednesday, April 22, at 8:00 pm ET.
Though Gretzky after the 1999 NHL season, five years prior to the NHL Draft in which Ovechkin was selected first overall, the two have been linked as they can both be considered the faces of the NHL for their respective generations without much argument. Gretzky currently ranks first in all-time scoring with 894 goals while Ovechkin ranks eighth and still has a ways to go (706 goals) before he catches number 99.
Even better is that the matchup will help to promote donations and bring support to people in need during this trying time. Fans will be able to donate on the Twitch stream to raise money for the Edmonton Food Bank and the Monumental Sports and Entertainment Foundation's "Feeding the Frontlines" fund.
As part of the stay-at-home initiative that has spread throughout the world of sports, the Capitals have been one of many teams to look to e-sports as a way to continue connecting with fans and staying active during the pandemic. Here at RADIO.COM Sports we played through a fun hypothetical simulation to add to the many efforts at curbing the hunger of hockey fans so that they get a glimpse of NHL action (see video above).
