(WEEI) -- Rob Gronkowski says he isn’t currently questioning his decision to hang up the pads, but reserves the right to change his mind once the season begins.
In an interview this week on the “Rich Eisen Show,” the all-world tight end, who’s looked noticeably leaner in recent photos, said he’s enjoyed his offseason of leisure.
“There’s definitely going to be times when you miss it and everything,” Gronkowski said, via NESN. “I would always say that it’s still the offseason right now. I mean I can’t really say how I’m going to feel about it when the games start rolling around and everything. You know, I just felt like it was time. I feel really good right now and it was just definitely something I thought it was the right time and the right thing to do.”
Earlier this week, Gronk was photographed at a promotional event, so his skinnier frame was on display for all to see. He’s also done a fair amount of traveling with girlfriend Camille Kostek, being spotted in Mexico in Mexico prior to the start of NFL free agency.
Though Gronk appreciates the rest and relaxation now, he adds he’s never experienced an August without football, so the adjustment could be difficult.
“You want to know something? I never had an August off in my life. So, it’s gonna be a little different,” he added. “That’s when it’s gonna start really seeing the change is when that comes around in August when I’m not in training camp; I might not know what to do with myself. To have that load off your back, I mean I’ve been playing football for 15 years straight in a row of that grind. Just relaxing right now feels good.”
With Benjamin Watson and Matt LaCosse currently sitting atop the tight end depth chart, Tom Brady might be hoping Gronk feels differently once training camp begins, even if he seemingly has some conditioning to catch up on.
