HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- One of the Astros’ key pieces to success over the last few years is returning for the 2021 season.

In an interview with Fox 26’s Mark Berman, Astros pitching coach Brent Strom said he enjoyed his time coaching with manager Dusty Baker and their young pitchers this season.

Strom said it was difficult being away from family because of the COVID-19 protocols. And the Astros’ struggles had Strom, now 72, considering maybe taking a summer to himself.

Then the young pitchers emerged, throwing critical innings for Houston in their run to the American League Championship Series.

Strom, who became the Astros’ pitching coach before the 2014 season, is credited for his work with a long list of Astros pitchers, both past and present: Charlie Morton, Gerrit Cole, Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander among them.

The Astros picked up Strom’s club option for next season, along with Baker’s and third base coach Gary Pettis, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September and coached from afar.
