Warriors honor VP and Oakland native Kamala Harris with custom jersey

Vice President Kamala Harris has received what may be the ultimate inauguration gift for a Bay Area native: a custom Warriors jersey.

The team gifted Harris, who was born in Oakland, with a jersey that reads “Madame VP” on the back with the number 49, celebrating Harris as the 49th Vice President of the United States.

Harris represented the Bay Area for many years on her path to the White House, first as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, City Attorney and later District Attorney of San Francisco, California Attorney General and then U.S. Senator from California.

“Madame Vice President, I’m not saying you’ve got to put this in your office at the White House, but it probably would be a good idea,” said Steph Curry. “Congratulations! Blazing your own path, we are all rooting and supporting you the whole way.”

The team released a video acknowledging Harris’ history-making ascension to the second highest office in the country. The video features a young girl from Oakland named Stella who says, “I like that Kamala is from Oakland too. I love that Kamala looks like me and I can do anything.”

Harris is the first woman in the office, as well as the first Black person and first Asian American to serve as Vice President.

“Oh this means so much to me you guys. I will proudly, proudly display this,” said Harris, accepting the jersey. “And I cannot thank you enough and you always bring such joy and pride to me, as a daughter of Oakland.”
