The New York Jets have found their next head coach.

The team announced on Thursday night that it has reached an agreement in principle with San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh to become head coach.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it is a five-year deal and Saleh plans to bring 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur as his offensive coordinator.

Saleh, 41, will be a first-time head coach after spending the last four seasons in San Francisco. He guided the 49ers to a top-10 defense in 2020 despite several key injuries and second overall in 2019 when the team reached the Super Bowl.

Prior to San Francisco, Saleh was a linebackers coach with the Jaguars and defensive quality control coach with the Seahawks.

Saleh takes over a Jets team that finished 2-14 last season and will have the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft, as well as an additional first rounder from the Seahawks at 23.

One of the biggest challenges Saleh will face will be at the quarterback position, where the Jets must decide if they should stick with Sam Darnold or go a different direction – perhaps selecting Ohio State QB Justin Field with the No. 2 pick.
