UPDATE: JANUARY 18TH

Hey friends, how are you? No really, how are you? We started the new year GUNG-HO for a fantastic 2021! Are you sticking to your goals? Are you forgiving yourself for the mistakes and still trying to keep those resolutions? I hope you can answer, "YES!" If not, don't beat yourself up... get back on that horse. Try again.

When I was a little kid, I can remember learning to ride my Strawberry Shortcake bike without training wheels. It was on the sidewalk in my neighborhood with my Dad patiently holding the back of the seat. I fell over so many times (no knee guards or even helmets back then in the 80s!) I earned quite a few scrapes and band-aids, but my Dad never let me give up. We went back out there and got back on that bike day after day. I can remember the feeling like it was yesterday, when it all clicked. The pedal speed under my feet, my sweaty grip on the plastic handle bars with pink tassels blowing in the wind, my wobbly balance steadying and that unmistakeable, lightness... the freedom in my chest, when I knew I was doing it on my own.

It was not easy to get there, but that feeling was worth all the hard work.

Much like learning to ride your bike, or passing that extra-tough teacher's test, or figuring out that complicated recipe you perfected, the reward is worth the work.

When you are face to face with your own internal challenge for health, wellness, self-care and improvement, remember all the difficult things you've already done. You already have the inner workings of success. Apply those skills to what's right in front of you.

That feeling of freedom that I had on the strawberry-covered bike at age 7 is that same feeling I have today when I put in the work.

You already know how. Trust yourself and put in the work. I believe in you.

Jenn

P.S. Today is Day 18 of my January Whole30 - some days are easier than others, but I'm ready to feel the wind on my face. Sticking with it. You got this.

UPDATE JANUARY 6TH:

Hello friend!

Today is Day 6 on my 2021 Whole30 January journey and to be honest, the sugar withdrawals are TOUGH! I have struggled with some headaches... isn't it so weird how your body responds so quickly to a shift in eating?! On a positive note, I am sleeping better and have way more energy!

At this point I have learned a few tricks and thought I would pass along to you.

1. Get the right supplies! On the Whole30 you are not allowed to consume any foods with added sugar, so you get really good a reading ingredient labels. So many foods have added sugar! You'll find sugar in the weirdest places like salad dressings, chicken broth, spice mixtures, etc.

Here are the brand names I am leaning on for good, whole foods:
Tessemae's https://www.tessemaes.com/collections/whole30-products
The New Primal https://thenewprimal.com/
Primal Kitchen https://www.primalkitchen.com/

2. Food prep, food prep, food prep! Use your time in the kitchen wisely and prepare a lot of food. If you're chopping peppers for chili, then chop a few extra for next day salads or snacks. Grilling chicken? Double up the marinade and amount, so you can eat it the next day. Stay ahead of the game and you'll never find yourself without a Whole30 compliant snack or meal.

3. Breathe - remember to quiet that voice that says, "give up" or "one little cookie won't hurt" - SHHHHHH! Tell that voice it can come back in February, but for now you are committed to YOU, eating Whole and feeling GOOD.

Sending you lots of encouragement and love, Jenn

Happy Feel-Good New Year!

I hope you’re loving the new sound of Star 94, the Rhythm of Atlanta! I know that whenever I listen to our station it makes me smile, brings up a fun memory or reminds me that I know so many lyrics to these awesome songs I had forgotten about. In my mind, I’m like, “Oh yeah! I love this song!”

Because 2020 was rough, so many of you are determined to make 2021 a better year. I’m with you! A year of good health and a year to come out of all this stronger and happier. For me, I hope it’s a year of changing perspectives. What does it actually mean to be happy? How can I live with more inspired purpose? How can I be a better mom, wife and friend? How can I change my habits to feel better in this body I have been given?

I’m starting with a Whole30 January. Have you heard of Whole30? It’s a reset. A chance to allow your body to get rid of toxins and gets you rethinking your relationships with food and alcohol. This will be a big challenge for me, as I have eaten (and drank) my way through ALL my feelings in 2020! It’s left me feeling unhealthy and disappointed in myself at times. But it is never too late to start on a better path!

I’ll document the journey and I invite you to join me. Follow me on IG for story updates and recipes along the way. IG: @jennhobby. If you want to learn more about the Whole30 program, you can start here: https://whole30.com/. There are books, blogs, podcasts and recipes galore to help you learn the rules and get started. (P.S. They are not paying me to talk about them - I have done a Whole30 in the past and it really helped me start fresh.) I encourage you to do whatever plan works for you to be healthier. Every little step counts.

Wishing you a fantastic start to 2021. You CAN do anything you set your mind to. Make the sacrifices. It will be worth it because ultimately, it’s a gift to yourself.

Happy New Year!

With love, Jenn Hobby
