It was revealed after the Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final that the Ovechkins were expecting their first child. Sergei is named after Alex Ovechkin's late brother, who died of a blood clot when Alex was 10

Alex Ovechkin and Nastya Ovechkina have welcomed a baby boy, Sergei. Named after Ovechkin’s late brother. 8/18/2018 is a fitting DOB, too.

Similar to his father, Sergei appears to like the number eight: the newest Ovechkin arrived on 8/18/2018.
