Redskins place Trent Williams on Reserve/Non-Football Injury list

The Redskins have placed left tackle Trent Williams on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list, the team announced Thursday, the latest procedural move between a team and player at a contractual impasse.

The Reserve/NFI designation is used for players who won't be returning to the active roster during the regular season. By using this designation, Williams won't count against the roster. It's up to the Redskins whether they choose to pay him or not. The Redskins are effectively closing the door on a chance for Williams to return to practice this season.

In contrast, Bryce Love is on the Active/NFI list for an injury he suffered in college. The Redskins are still paying the rookie running back, who could potentially return to practice this season.

#Redskins announce they’ve moved Trent Williams to NFI (non-football injury) which means:-They can opt not to pay him.-They can try and toll his contract, but this would be challenged and current precedent suggests Williams would likely win that case and this year would count.

What comes next is anyone's guess, but will probably be predicated on whether the Redskins choose to pay Williams, who ended the lengthiest holdout in the NFL by showing up to Redskins Park on Oct. 29, hours before the trade deadline.

In a statement provided to 106.7 The Fan this week, the NFLPA said it will honor Williams' wishes at this time by not pursuing a formal review of his treatment from the team, although it warned the Redskins against spreading disinformation about Williams' private medical information.

"Although he has asked us to not pursue a formal review of his treatment, we will consider all legal action if the affirmative disinformation campaign and the leaking of his private medical records does not stop," the statement reads. "Doctors have an ethical obligation to treat our men as patients first regardless of where their check comes from."
