The Redskins announced on Tuesday passing game coordinator Kevin O'Connell has been promoted to offensive coordinator.
The 33-year-old has spent the past two seasons with the Redskins, as quarterbacks coach in 2017 and as passing game coordinator in 2018. He now takes over the offense for Matt Cavanaugh, who has been named Senior Offensive Assistant. Cavanaugh has been with Washington for four seasons, serving as offensive coordinator for the past two (2017-18) and as quarterbacks coach the two seasons prior (2015-16).
The Redskins also announced that Jim Tomsula will return for his third season as the team's defensive line coach.
These moves round out Jay Gruden's coaching staff after weeks of turnover, which included the departures of special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica, tight ends coach Wes Phillips, and defensive backs coach Torrian Gray. The Redskins last week added Nate Kaczor (special teams coordinator), Ray Horton (defensive backs) and Brian Angelichio (tight ends).
The Redskins also lost inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti, who had been with the organization for 16 seasons. Olivadotti left to join the staff of new Packers coach Matt LaFleur, who served as the Redskins' quarterbacks coach from 2010 to 2013. He has not been officially replaced on the Redskins staff.

As far as I know, this doesn’t mean playcalling duties. It means he will be in charge of making the offense cohesive. He will be reponsible for crafting an offense that mixes the strengths of all the key players and coaches.

Biggest way I predict that plays out:When he was just the passing game coordinator, he had very little influence on the run game. Now, he can say “we’re paring down the run game” and “we’re marrying it to our playaction.” These are good things.
