It was clear after watching a few weeks of Patriots training camp that Cam Newton would be the Week 1 starter, but now it’s official.
There is clarity now under center for one of the teams in the Week 1 matchup between New England and the Miami Dolphins.
According to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe, Bill Belichick told the team Thursday morning that Newton will be the starting quarterback, beating out Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer for the job.
In addition, according to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, Newton has also been named a team captain.
Newton was officially signed in early July after being released by the Panthers in March.
The 2015 NFL MVP has a lot to prove this season, but seems determined to prove all his doubters wrong.
The quarterback signed a one-year deal with the Patriots that is worth up to $7.5 million.
New England will host Miami on Sept. 13.
