(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot has announced new summer programs for young people in the city.

One new opportunity for the youth of Chicago this summer is the Chicago Youth Service Corps. It’s a chance for 2,000 young people to help in the city’s response and recovery related to Covid-19.

Mayor Lightfoot on Friday said other summer programs will offer opportunities, including some jobs, to 20,000 young people.

“Every single program that’s being offered - every single department that’s offering programs - is also offering virtual interactions,” she said.

“We tried to balance the need to get young people out and get them exercising and breathing fresh air, which is a good thing. But also recognizing the realities of where we are in the arc of this virus.”

Summer programs begin July 6 and run through Aug. 14.
