CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A local fashion designer is making masks for Chicago police officers to wear as they pay their respects to a colleague who died from coronavirus.

After working out some kinks, Barbara Bates, who has dressed the likes of Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey and Whitney Houston, has created wear has been making thousands of masks for local hospitals, six south suburban police departments, and a few clients.

Now she and workers at her South Loop space, Bates Designs, have turned their focus to masks for officers to wear during the funeral services for Police Sgt. Clifford Martin.

Martin was the second Chicago police officer to die from COVID-19.

The masks are black cotton with a cobalt blue line through the middle and have a filter that Bates said is the same level as those in N95 respirator masks.

Thanks to a donation from the owner of W & W Towing, Bates has been able to make 500 masks so far and hopes to double that amount by Tuesday’s services.
