CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While thousands of people find themselves out of work there are companies hiring right now.

Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas has tracked 129,000 hiring announcements this month.

Companies are looking to fill retail, delivery and healthcare equipment manufacturing jobs quickly, so they're hiring before background checks and drug screenings are complete.

Senior Vice President Andy Challenger says that means workers with a less-than-stellar job history have a chance to make a good impression first.

Of those companies that are hiring, 79 percent said in a Challenger survey this week that they're conducting interviews over the phone or via the web.

Challenger suggests applicants show openness and flexibility during these unprecedented times and encourages them to practice interviewing on a web cam.
