LAKE COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Lake County Sheriff's Office K9 Diesel and Deputy Craig Somerville Jr. were recognized for teaming up to find an endangered Tower Lakes teen on Saturday.

The 18-year-old is nonverbal and requires adult supervision.

On a social media post, officials reported he had been missing for about an hour from his home when officers were called to help.
The Lake County Sheriff’s office said Diesel tracked the scent of the teenager and found him a few blocks away from home at North Barrington Elementary School.

"K9 Diesel and Deputy Somerville responded to assist other deputies in locating the missing person. K9 Diesel began tracking right away to a nearby school, where the subject was located. He was safely reunited with his family thanks to K9 Diesel and several other sheriff’s deputies!" Somerville said.

It’s not the first time Diesel’s nose has earned him praise.

The K9 earned the "Paws of Distinction" award from the Chicago Crime Commission in 2016 after a series of successful searches.
