(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The mayor of Michigan City, Indiana will close the public lakefront for a week, beginning Friday.
Mayor Duane Parry made the announcement online Thursday evening. He said he has ordered the temporary closure of entrances to the public beach, effective Friday at 12:01 a.m.
His order runs through Thursday Aug. 20, unless extended by the city council.
Parry blames “large crowds that continue to congregate on the lakefront.” The crowds have violated state and local mandates that require social-distancing and mask-wearing, he said.
The mayor said he is also exending his existing order to close Washington Park, Fedder’s Alley and the senior center, due to COVID-19 concerns.
The zoo remains open, with restrictions and by appointment.
