CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Actor Nick Offerman, best known for his role on the sitcom “Parks and Recreation,” is a native of far southwest suburban Minooka.

He's shared an online petition to his Twitter account calling on Minooka Community High School to change its mascot. Currently, athletes are referred to as the Indians.

Offerman tweeted the mascot should be “something that is not denigrating indigenous folk.”

“It’s dumb and shameful to resist this by now, unless you enjoy racism,” he said.

Offerman noted that the NFL and NASCAR are making “course corrections” from racism, so the school system should be able to.

Minooka, Illinois! Here’s your chance to get on the scoreboard of decency. Sign here to change the school mascot from the “Indian” to something that is not denigrating indigenous folk. It’s dumb and shameful to resist this by now, unless you enjoy racism.https://t.co/rDgeKRUozY pic.twitter.com/0HAiE17R0f
