(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Part of northbound Lake Shore Drive will remain closed until at least Tuesday evening after a bridge support beam cracked.

The Chicago Department of Transportation discovered a crack in a steel beam that supports Lake Shore Monday morning, department officials said in a statement.

All northbound traffic was diverted from northbound Lake Shore Drive at Randolph Street. Northbound Lake Shore traffic is being detoured via Randolph, Monroe, Columbus and Lower Wacker, CDOT said. Southbound traffic is not affected.

The closure will last until at least Tuesday evening, CDOT said. Motorists are advised to use I-90/94 as an alternative route.

Permanent repairs will take even longer.

Vehicles can access northbound Lake Shore via Lower Wacker Drive or the entrance ramp at Grand, according to CDOT. The ramp from eastbound Randolph is closed.
