(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Northwestern Medicine is looking for 5,000 people to sign up for coronavirus vaccine trials.

Late August is when the first of the vaccine trials is set to begin at Northwestern.

Five hundred people will be part of that first trial.

Dr. Babafemi Taiwo is chief of infectious diseases at Northwestern Medicine, and he’s the principal investigator on the vaccine trial.

He is asking people to sign up for the trials.

“I would particularly encourage persons like me who are African, or African descent, to really contribute to this very important effort. And also other racial and ethnic minorities,” the physician said Monday.

The first trial will involve an AstraZeneca vaccine drug candidate that Dr. Taiwo says was tested in the UK with results he calls “encouraging.”
