(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The family of a man struck and killed by an unmarked Chicago police vehicle last week while he was riding a scooter is filing a wrongful death lawsuit.

Investigators say the police vehicle was southbound on Halsted near 118th Street on July 8 with lights and sirens on when it hit and killed Mario Winters.

Attorney Andrew M. Stroth represents Winters' family.

He says this is the latest in a series of deadly crashes involving Chicago police driving dangerously in communities of color on the South and West Sides.

Stroth says the wrongful death lawsuit seeks unspecified monetary damages for Winters' family, including his five children. It also seeks to compel Chicago police to follow rules already in place to prevent such accidents.

Chicago police declined to comment because of the lawsuit.
