GARY, Indiana (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A SWAT standoff in Gary, Indiana ended Monday evening with 2 officers wounded and the death a suspect.

Two police officers were wounded in a shooting while assisting in a Merrillville investigation. One SWAT officer was shot in the chest and arm and another was hit by shrapnel, police said.

Members of the SWAT team were called in to a residence at 2500 Waverly drive to negotiate, Lake County media spokesperson Dawn Westerfield said at a press conference.

When those negotiations failed the SWAT team entered the home where the suspect had barricaded himself. A gun battle reportedly followed.

Multiple Sources report that the male suspect in his 20s was shot and killed.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is handling the shooting investigation.

Both officers are in stable condition. The officer who was shot was wearing a vest.
