Illinois Passes 5 Million Coronavirus Tests, Sees Another High Case Load Of 2,529

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois passed the 5 million mark for coronavirus testing Saturday and saw another high case load of new cases, the health department announced.

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced 74,286 test specimens reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 5,057,142.

The state also saw another 2,529 cases and 25 deaths, seven of which were in Cook County.

The statewide positivity rate is down to 3.5% but Chicago's rate is at 4.5%. Although down from previous weeks, the city is still seeing an average of 247 new cases a day, according to the Chicago Department of Public Health's COVID-19 dashboard.

As of Friday night, IDPH saw 1,469 people in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 326 patients were in the ICU and 141 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

The total coronavirus cases in the state are now at 272,856 cases, including 8,436 deaths.
