(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gov. JB Pritzker is predicting painful budgets, including layoffs, if Illinois doesn't get more coronavirus relief from Washington — and soon.

Pritzker on Tuesday called it a nightmare scenario. He’s ordered his agency heads to prepare to cut 5% from their current department budgets if Congress and President Trump do not approve a financial assistance package for states.

The governor had hoped money from Washington would help offset revenue losses from the pandemic. Without aid, the budget cuts would get even stiffer for the next state spending plan, he said.

“When you include all of the cities and counties that are affected by this, we’re literally  talking about thousands who will get laid off,” Pritzker said.

That would impact the types of services residents receive, including public safety, he said.
