CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- State health officials announced over 3,600 new coronavirus cases Saturday, another high load similar to Friday's big jump that are in line with a nationwide surge in new cases.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 3,629 new cases of coronavirus including 27 additional deaths, 11 in Cook County.
On Friday, the state saw 4,556 new cases of COVID-19, the highest number of new cases reported by the state throughout the pandemic.
While the state saw 77,489 tests in the last 24 hours, the statewide positivity for the last week rose to 5.2%.
In Chicago, the positivity rate is a tad lower at 5.1%, but the city is seeing a higher daily test number than the previous week. There were over 10,000 daily tests and about 477 positives in the last day, according to city data.
As of Friday night, 2,073 people in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19 and 422 of those patients were in the ICU and 165 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
These new numbers bring the total coronavirus cases in the state to 339,803 cases, including 9,192 deaths.
