Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - A new 5G network is up and running in Western New York.
Starting today, Verizon's 5G service is available at both New Era Field and KeyBank Center, meaning anyone with a Verizon device capable of accessing a 5G network will be able to do so at those locations. These are the first places in the Buffalo area that people with 5G devices will get to experience Verizon’s 5G network.
"A lot of our strategy comes down to bringing 5G to public spaces and major venues," said David Weissmann with Verizon. "In the 31 cities we've deployed this year that's been our strategy."
How fast will the new network be? Some carriers have advertised 5G speeds that weren't actually on a 5G network. Weissmann said that wouldn't be the case here.
"This is legitimate 5G," Weissmann said. "I've been traveling around the country doing field tests, and we're seeing the 5G network that we're deploying... getting well above 1 Gigabit per second, which is really unheard of in a wireless network... It's faster than most people have internet connectivity in their home."
As far as further rollout of the network, Weissman told WBEN that much of their strategy depends on how various municipalities are receptive to it.
