CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Illinois bakery has four types of shortbread cookies that have become very popular in these final few days before Election Day.
Liz Bearwald said her Bent Fork Bakery in Highwood makes a red, white and blue “Vote" cookie, an “In Fauci We Trust” cookie with a picture of key White House Coronavirus Task Force member Dr. Anthony Fauci on it, and cookies with the likenesses of President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden.
"The Fauci cookies are definitely the most popular with the Trump and the Biden neck and neck. I don’t know much about politics, but I know we got a good cookie race going here," Bearwald said.
Bearwald sais some people whisper which candidate’s cookie they want while others proudly ask. Either way, she said, customers are very well behaved.
"It’s all in good fun. There's been no fights breaking out, no arguments, no arm wrestling or thumb wrestling," she said.
Bearwald said the In Fauci We Trust cookies are very popular among healthcare workers.
"The Fauci cookies, people always laugh and they go, 'That’s awesome. I want some of those. I know people who’d love those,'" she said.
Bearwald said more than 200 Fauci cookies have been sold, compared to about 150 cookies each of the Biden and Trump cookies.
She said after all of the shortbread cookies are made, her bakery screens on in frosting paper the actual image.
Bearwald said the whole idea is to make people happy.
"If you make something sweet, it takes away a little bit of the tension that people are feeling these days. So, between everything going on and then you throw in an election, it’s a little nuts so, people come in and it makes them smile," she said.
