Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A maskless photo of Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz at a weekend golf event is causing a stir on social media and giving critics of the political leader an opportunity to call it a 'double standard'.
In the photo, Poloncarz is seen in a group of seventeen golfers, shoulder to shoulder and without masks.
In a statement released on social media Sunday, Poloncarz acknowledges he should have worn a mask but added, "Nothing the team members did in that photo is contrary to our health protocols."
Poloncarz, who has locally been an outspoken proponent of COVID guidelines and quick to point out groups who disobey them, finds himself on the receiving end of harsh criticisms.
Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw was quick to issue a statement on the photo, stating: “I don’t want to hear Mark Poloncarz criticizing anyone not wearing a mask, not social distancing and eating communal food. His Health Department would shut down a business for this. Hypocrite. Do as I say, not as I do."
