Saints, Pelicans owner 'shaken' after attempted carjacking

USA TODAY

A man allegedly tried to steal New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson’s car while she was still sitting inside the car.

A New Orleans Police report did not identify Benson as the victim of the attempted auto theft, however, Saints and Pelicans spokesman Greg Bensel confirmed it was Benson.

“While she was very shaken at the time, she was unharmed and is doing fine,” Bensel said in a statement.

The police report says a white Nissan Titan parked next to Benson's car on South Claiborne Avenue in downtown New Orleans at about 2:15 local time last Saturday.

The unidentified man gets out of the Nissan and enters Benson's car in attempt to steal it, cops said. Benson ordered the man to get out of her car, according to the report, and the would-be car thief then fled the scene in the Nissan truck.
