NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Small gym owners in New York are banding together to sue the Cuomo administration for the right to reopen.

Boutique gym owners are already on the brink of losing it all, said Adrienne Yurgosky, owner of West Side Pilates in Manhattan and Long Island City.

She notes that many gyms won’t be able to reopen at all because of the shutdown.

“They've even thrown around a percentage of maybe 75% won't. This will really kill our industry,” she said.

Yurgosky says her Pilates studio only handles three to four clients at a time.

“It's very confusing for us because many of us think we are personal service, because some categories were labeled under such, but the state has determined in this matter that we fit under gyms,” Yurgosky said.

A spokesman for the governor would not comment specifically on the pending lawsuit, but said that every decision they make is based on data and expert analysis and they are continuing to study how and when indoor gyms and fitness centers can open safely.
