HADDONFIELD, N.J. (WCBS 880) — Some basketball-loving 9 year olds were disappointed when their elementary school talent show was canceled last month due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After practicing for months, the third graders from Haddonfield, New Jersey were planning to show off their basketball skills by doing some tricks inspired by the Harlem Globetrotters.

“Their talent show was supposed to occur the week we were quarantined,” says mom Katie Gorman.

“I just felt this year wasn’t the time. Maybe next year,” her son, Max, said.

Gorman and some other moms came to the rescue, organizing a Zoom call so all the kids could at least demonstrate their hard work and perform for each other.

Last Thursday morning, the kids put on their uniforms, got out their basketballs, and took their living rooms and driveways to show off their moves — doing some behind-the-back passes and spinning the ball on their fingers.

To the children's surprise, a couple of extra guests also joined in.

There in a couple of Zoom boxes popped up real Globetrotters Hammer Harrison and Cheese Chisholm.

The parents had notified the Globtrotters beforehand and the team was more than happy to help organize the players being on the call.

They all did their tricks together and the kids even got a chance to ask the players some questions.

“It always gives me joy to give back to families, especially at a time like this to be able to have an impact on other people’s lives, to make them feel better, that’s the Harlem Globetrotters pride and joy,” said Chisholm. “I thought it was an amazing experience The kids definitely did their best, they tried their best, they came ready. It was cool.”

Now these kids will have a lifelong memory worth having in these dark days.
