VALLEY COTTAGE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Flames were seen raging in the middle of a Rockland County street late Monday night when a gas line caught fire.

According to the Congers Fire Department, the utility fire broke out on Kings Highway in the area of Svahn Drive in Valley Cottage.

WCBS 880 traffic reporter Jim Feldman was at the scene and recorded footage of the flames rising from the street.

He reports the gas line was possibly ignited from “burning power lines above it that fell to the ground.” He notes the fire started at around 4:45 p.m., around the same time that the area lost power.

Firefighters from both the Valley Cottage and Congers fire departments responded to the incident.

Officials confirmed to WCBS 880 that the fire was caused by downed power lines and noted utility crews were working to shut off the gas line around 7:45 p.m.

Congers fire officials have alerted residents that Kings Highway will be closed in both directions at Svahn Drive.
