Tent rentals skyrocket as families look to host Thanksgiving outdoors on Long Island

EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Tent rentals are skyrocketing on Long Island, where some families are planning to host their Thanksgiving outdoors to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Glenn Staudigel, of Affordable Party Rentals, says 2020 has been a hectic year for his business.

He says that he has been in the party rental business for 10 years and he’s rarely had requests for outdoor Shivas, weddings and children movie nights, but because of the pandemic, he’s had requests climb exponentially.

Staudigel says for two months, his phone has been ringing off the hook for a new request: tents for outdoor Thanksgiving dinners.

The problem, however, is that he rented out all his tents weeks ago.

“One guy was apparently begging me because he's got his 85-year-old mother and they don't know what to do and so they're looking for a tent. Unfortunately, we've been sold out,” he said.

There are some regulars who rent tents for Thanksgiving every year, but never has he seen this kind of surge.

“This season, I have to say since August, we’ve pretty much running seven days a week and many times up to 11 o’ clock at night setting up tents for people,” he explains.

Tent rentals with heaters can run from $800 to $1,000 at Affordable Party Rentals.

While Staudigel says he has been extremely busy in recent weeks, he still has not recovered from the losses earlier this year when the pandemic shutdown all non-essential businesses in March, April and May.
