A report is confirming wide speculation that Saints star Drew Brees is calling it a career after this season.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported the news during Fox's pregame coverage of Sunday night's Buccaneers-Saints playoff game in New Orleans.
"Tonight will be the last game he ever plays at the Superdome," Glazer reported shortly before kickoff. "Whenever their last game is -- if they lose tonight or lose next week -- that will be the last game he plays in the NFL.
"Drew Brees will be done. That's it."
Brees' future has been the topic of speculation since at least last offseason, when his previous contract he expired. He re-signed for two years and played well at times, but also had slumps and missed time with relatively serious rib and lung injuries.
In the spring, Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed 2020 would be Brees' "final season," but later retracted the comment.
Meanwhile, Tom Brady, Brees' fellow 40-something quarterback and his opponent on Sunday night, will return for a 22nd season in 2021, Glazer said.
"Tom Brady will continue," he added.
