(WCCO) Minneapolis police say this weekend was a violent one where five people were shot and one man was stabbed within eight hours -- between about 9:30 p.m. Saturday night and 3 a.m. Sunday.

In one of the incidents, a woman showed up at a local hospital at about 1:31 a.m. Sunday with critical gunshot wounds. What happened to her, why, when and where? Police have little information beyond the fact she was shot.

A second shooting happened Saturday at about 10:59 p.m. near North 24th Avenue and North 6th Street when several people were involved in a fight that led to gunshots. Two people suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Another man was shot at about 3:01 a.m. on the 2400 block of 18th Avenue South, police said. He was transported to Hennepin Healthcare, and is expected to survive.

A 5:29 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to a residence on the 4400 block of Minnehaha Avenue on a report of a man who was stabbed by a woman. He was taken to Hennepin Healthcare and is also expected to survive. The suspect fled the residence, but was later arrested.

To round it off, three people were injured in separate shootings Saturday in Minneapolis, and two more were shot in north Minneapolis Friday night.

The spate of shootings across the city in recent weeks led Lt. Bob Kroll, head of hte police union, to tell WCCO this weekend that it's a preview of what would happen if police were defunded.

"It's unbelievable," Kroll said. "Since George Floyd's death we've been seeing a preview, if you will ... The police have been completely overwhelmed, we've had retirements en masse occurring. They were short to being with. Let's not forget, the chief had asked the mayor for 400 more officers over a period of five years. We've got none of those. We have declined.

"If you want absolute lawlessness, let's talk about what occurred here. We've got $500 million and climbing in damages. We've got 1,500 businesses that are destroyed, many that will not return. We've had 120 people shot in the last five weeks. We've had over 10 deaths. If they want more of this to occur, go ahead and defund the police."
