While lower levels of college football have been cancelling and postponing the 2020 fall season for weeks, the MAC became the first FBS conference to pull the plug on football over the weekend.

Now, it sounds like the rest of major college football – including Power 5 conferences the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12, Big 12 – are on the verge of wiping out the 2020 football season, or at least postponing it to the spring.

According to ESPN, after a meeting over the weekend, Big Ten university presidents are “ready to pull the plug on its fall sports season” although they are not yet ready to make that announcement and are trying to assess whether other Power 5 conferences would follow along with such a dramatic decision even in the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

ESPN notes that Pac-12 leadership is expected to meet on Tuesday, while the ACC bumped up a meeting of its athletic directors to Monday to discuss the situation.

ESPN cites several sources as saying that “postponement or cancellation of the football season seems inevitable.”

“Nobody wanted to be the first to do it," a football coach from a Power 5 school told ESPN, "and now nobody will want to be the last."

Elsewhere, Sports Illustrated reported that various conference meetings set to be held this week are indeed “expected to result in the postponement of the 2020 college football season and all fall sports.”

Yahoo Sports also has reported that the Big Ten is on the “cusp of cancelling” the 2020 football season, only slow to make an announcement in an effort to see if other Power 5 conferences are set to follow suit.

My updated @YahooSports  story on the Big Ten, which is on the cusp of cancelling the 2020 football season. Programs have received instructions to go light on Monday. A final decision is close. Will the Big Ten have company this week? https://t.co/gqT8sQ8J2L
