Bill Belichick-Josh McDaniels relationship heavy focus in Do Your Job Part III, which premieres Wednesday

By WEEI 93.7

Wednesday night Patriots fans will want to be glued to the NFL Network beginning at 8 p.m. because two Patriots specials will air, beginning with Do Your Job Part III.

Everyone knows by now the gist of the program with the two prior editions, but there are some interesting elements unique to this one thanks to an advance copy.

The program focuses a great deal on the relationship between Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels. It gets into McDaniels’ rise on the coaching staff, which began on defense before moving to offense in 2004.

McDaniels discusses what it’s like working for Belichick.

“It’s hard for me to imagine anybody being a better leader and a better role model for a young coach,” he says. “He gives you responsibility, and then he lets you do your job. Because we’re not being micromanaged, that gives you confidence, and then you start to build trust. That’s just how a good organization works, and he fosters that every day.”

Belichick adds: “I give him a little bit of input, but 90 to 95 percent is his plan, his vision. Rarely do we see things that differently. But sometimes there will be things that I suggest. Sometimes he’ll say, ‘I think that would be great,’ and sometimes he’ll say, ‘I don’t really think this is the right time for us to do that. Here’s the reason why.’ And he’s usually right.”

Lastly, McDaniels gives a glimpse into the future.

“I’ll be excited to be there in Canton when [Belichick] goes in, five years after he’s done coaching, whenever that is, which will probably be a long time from now,” he says.

The feature focuses heavily on the final two regular-season games and the postseason with a lot of X’s and O’s talk on how the Patriots rushing attack was able to be so dominant down the stretch.

America’s Game: 2018 Patriots will follow this at 9 p.m.
