The Red Sox made a trade on Wednesday.
Left-hander Jeffrey Springs has been acquired from the Rangers in a trade for utility-man Sam Travis. To make room on the roster, Bobby Poyner has been designated for assignment.
Last season, Springs appeared in 25 big league games over three stints with the Rangers. Last year he was 4-1 despite a 6.40 ERA, but in 43 major league outings overall, he has an ERA of 4.90. Springs will likely compete for a spot in the bullpen, but has some starting experience.
Travis was DFA'd earlier this month to make room for Kevin Plawecki, so he was not on the 40-man roster.
Poyner bounced back and forth between Boston and Pawtucket in 2019.
