Stephon Gilmore had a very impressive 2019 season and he was recognized for it Saturday night.
The Patriots cornerback was selected as the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year at the NFL Honors ceremony in Miami. He became the first Patriots player ever to win the award.
Gilmore tied for the NFL lead with a career-high six interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. He also tied for the NFL lead with 20 passes defensed, matching his single-season high from 2018. He joined Ty Law (27 in 1998 and 23 in 2003) as the only Patriots with multiple seasons of 20-plus passes defensed in franchise history.
The cornerback was also a AP All-Pro for the second straight season.
