The Patriots currently will pick first at No. 23 overall in April's NFL Draft.
With Tom Brady now in Tampa Bay and the team not having a definitive answer at the position, some have speculated the team should select a QB with its first pick. This was discussed on the latest Off Day podcast with Andy Hart and Ryan Hannable, and it seems like the two disagree with that suggestion.
“Nope. Hard no," Hannable said. "They have other needs — way greater needs — and they have to find out what they have in (Jarrett) Stidham. You go into the year and you let Stidham play it out and see what you have. If he sucks, then next year you draft a guy high or spend big money on a guy via free agency.”
Hart believes the Patriots could draft a quarterback, but if they did it would be in the later rounds.
“Pretty low — 15 percent," he said. "I think they like Stidham and they want to see what Stidham can be. Even if they feel like they need to have an insurance policy, I don’t think they would do a first-round insurance policy.”
The pair discussed all the quarterbacks in the draft, including the best fits for the Patriots. Also, running backs were discussed, although it seems highly unlikely New England will select one.
