The Patriots' QB situation will be fascinating to watch over the coming weeks and months.

As of now, there's Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer and two undrafted rookies -- J'Mar Smith and Brian Lewerke.

Many believe Stidham will be the starter, but appearing on Dale & Keefe with Andy Hart Friday, NFL Media's Mike Giardi was asked who would take the first-team reps if the Patriots had a training camp practice today.

“Brian Hoyer," he said. "Look, I think there are so many different ways to look at this and the way they are approaching this and you mention Mike Lombardi, and Lombardi has been for the last three weeks pounding the Cam Newton drum as still a real possibility and a good landing spot for him. I think Bill (Belichick) — I think they like Stidham. I think Stidham hasn’t proven to them — obviously how could he? — that he’s ready.

"So I think it’s going to be incumbent upon him to beat out whoever the other quarterback is, whether it is Brian Hoyer or they make a commitment to Cam Newton. Although I would say if Cam Newton is in here they probably feel about about his health and he’s probably going to be the starter.”

Giardi was then asked who would be the Week 1 starter and he said Hoyer, although he wasn't totally confident in it.

As for Newton, Giardi said when he's asked about the Patriots' interest he's been told, "as of right now, no," which is different than when he asked about Jameis Winston earlier in the offseason when it was a hard no.
