Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman underwent a knee procedure this week that ESPN says will cause him to miss “some time.”

NFL Network has since reported that Edelman being placed on injured reserve “is very much in play” due to the surgery to deal with a “chronic knee injury, basically bone on bone.” If the Patriots do put Edelman on IR, he’d be forced to miss at least three games.

Friday morning, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick updated Edelman’s status and potential for return during his video call with the local media.

“We’ll see how the return goes,” Belichick said. “I mean I don’t think is a season-ending situation. But we’ll see. I’m not a doctor. We’ll see how it goes here. Hopefully he’ll be back. I know he’s worked awfully hard and nobody is more competitive than Julian is. So he’ll do everything he can to be back out there and we’ll just take it day by day in the process and see how it goes.”

Belichick was also asked if the hope would be that by getting the surgery done now that Edelman might be able to come back at full strength later in the season. Edelman has clearly fought through the knee injury, catching just three passes over the last two games and failing to catch more than three in a game since Week 2 at Seattle.

“That’s really a medical question, that I don’t feel qualified to answer,” Belichick said. “I think medically with the player, in consultation with the player and the medical staff, we always try to do what’s best. The player always tries to do what’s best. And so whatever decisions are made are made with those intentions. So that’s…whatever it ends up being it ends up being. I don’t think we can control that. We’ll see how it goes. Hopefully he’ll have a good recovery and be back better than where he was before the surgery.
That’s the whole point of doing the surgery is that the situation will improve.
So hopefully it will improve.”

Edelman did not practice on Thursday. According to NFLN he is out for Sunday’s trip to Buffalo to take on the Bills.
