Cam Newton explains why he has nicknames for almost all of his Patriots teammates

One of the things that's been hard to miss with Cam Newton this season with the Patriots is he has a nickname for virtually every player on the team.

Some of them are Dirty Dave (David Andrews), Smokin' Joe (Joe Thuney), Doughboy (N'Keal Harry), Winnie the Pooh (Isaiah Wynn), etc.

Following the Patriots' 36-20 win over the Raiders on Sunday, Newton explained one of the reasons for the nicknames.

“That's just the steez, guy. You know what I’m saying? You just have to keep it fun," he said. "I just appreciate the guys for just rolling with it. One thing I did kind of peep from walking in Day 1, there’s an aura that you get when you play as a member of the New England Patriots. That aura can sometimes be like [grunting], you know what I’m saying? The Patriot Way to a degree from the outside looking in, but from inside looking out these guys they really enjoy the process, as well as myself, and me being a member I am lucky to be here and any time I can lighten the mood in someway shape or form, I hesitate not.”

Newton finished Sunday 17-for-28 passing with 162 passing yards, a touchdown and an interception, while adding 27 yards on the ground.

The 2-1 Patriots will take on the Chiefs next Sunday on the road.
