Former 3rd-rounder Derek Rivers cut loose by Patriots

The Derek Rivers Era never quite got rolling in New England.

Saturday, the story that started with Rivers being taken in the third-round of the 2017 Draft might have reached its final chapter.

Viewed as a potential pass-rushing threat when taken with the 83rd overall pick (one spot in front of Tampa Bay receiver Chris Godwin) out of Youngstown State, Rivers' career has constantly been derailed by injuries.

In training camp of his rookie season, Rivers tore his ACL. He also missed all of 2019 with an injury, as well. This season he played in eight games, making four tackles and one sack. For his career he has just 2 1/2 sacks.
