The 2020 season has seen its share of bizarre delays, but this one is brand new: a fan delay?

There are no fans allowed inside MLB ballparks this year, but indeed, a “fan” caused a delay in Sunday’s Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway Park.

With two outs and DJ LeMahieu batting in the top of the eighth inning, play was stopped as someone in a Ryan Brasier Red Sox jersey climbed out of the scaffolding and down into the outfield camera well, yelling “Boston loves New York” and throwing some hats on the field.

The beginning of the incident was actually broadcast on YES – television broadcasts are usually loathe to give publicity to fans getting involved on the field – with Michael Kay wondering how the gentleman got into the park. The camera quickly shifted to the Yankees’ dugout, where Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge were seen laughing about what was going on.

It was perhaps the only thing worth laughing about for the Yankees on Sunday, who notched just three hits and saw touted rookie Deivi Garcia roughed up in a 10-2 loss to the Red Sox that snapped their 10-game overall winning streak, 12-game winning streak against Boston, and prevented them (for now) from clinching a playoff berth.
