A Giants press release Tuesday announcing the team's quarterback change did not show Eli Manning the respect he deserves, WFAN's Mike Francesa said.
Francesa ripped the Giants for not including any quotes from general manager Dave Gettleman or the team's owners about Manning. Rookie Daniel Jones will make his first career start Sunday at Tampa Bay.
"He's been their quarterback for 15 years," Francesa said of Manning. "He's one of five men to be a two-time Super Bowl MVP. ... He's in the top 10 of every category just about that quarterbacks can be in, in the history of the league. ... The last 233 games played, he started 232 of them. He has been the NFL Man of the Year. He has represented the franchise in a way that you could only hope somebody could represent the franchise in the last 15, going on 16, years. He holds every Giant passing record. ... And there's not a quote in the story from the general manager or an owner. That is an absolute disgrace.
"You are going to sit an iconic member of your team who gave you 15 years of class, 15 years of performance, 15 years of everything he had," Francesa added. "And there's not a quote from the owner? There's not a quote from the general manager about this transition of benching this player after 15 years and 232 games? When did the Giants forget how to be a classy organization?
"And the fact that we haven't seen John Mara today or seen Gettleman is a joke, an absolute joke," Francesa added. "That's a slap in the face to some of the most loyal fans in all of a professional sport."
