Summer Camps have started, training has resumed, and, as always, projections about how each MLB team should fare during the season continue to get updated.
With just two weeks left before the regular season kicks off, FanGraphs released their latest projections for the 2020 season on Friday, and they bring good news for both boroughs of the Big Apple.
The big winner in FanGraphs’ eyes are the Yankees, who are projected to win the AL East with a 35-25 record (roughly a game ahead of the 33.8-26.2 Rays), and have a 72.3 percent chance of making the playoffs – 47.1 percent chance of winning the division, 25.3 percent chance at a wild card – with a 10.7 percent chance to win the World Series.
That 72.3 percent playoff chance is third behind the Dodgers (86.7) and Astros (77.8) for the best in baseball, and those are also the only two teams with better percentages to win their division and win the World Series.
As for the Mets? They’re likely playoff bound as well, with FanGraphs giving them a projected 31.7 wins – third-best in the NL East but only 1.1 games behind Atlanta for first – and a 43.1 percent chance of making the playoffs.
The Mets are at 23.8 percent division and 19.3 percent wild card in that chance (with a 3.2 percent chance of winning their third World Series title), but there is good news: the Mets’ 31.7 projected win total is the fifth-highest in the NL, meaning, as you may have already discerned, that the season going to form based on these projections means the Mets would be the second Wild Card in the NL, playing the defending World Series champion Nationals in the Wild Card Game for the right to face the Dodgers.
All it takes, is 60 games and a dream!
