Mets Place Pitcher Steven Matz On IL With Nerve Discomfort

By WFAN Sports Radio 101.9 FM/66AM New York

The Mets are losing games on the field, and now they’re losing pitchers off of it.

The team announced Thursday that starter Steven Matz will go to the 10-day injured list. He is dealing with radial nerve discomfort that resulted in him being scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Padres.

Steven Matz has been placed on the 10-Day IL (radial nerve discomfort), retroactive to May 5, and Dom Smith has been recalled from Syracuse. #Mets

This news comes after pitcher Jason Vargas was placed on the very same injured list on Monday. He is suffering from tightness in his hamstring.

First baseman Dominic Smith was called back up from Triple-A Syracuse to replace Matz on the roster.

Mickey Callaway can ill afford the Mets suffering injuries off the diamond at a time when it seems like their season might be slipping away. New York has only won one of its last five games, and has fallen to third in the NL East.

If the Mets choose to add another arm, Dallas Keuchel is still out there. The 31-year-old didn't reach an agreement with any clubs this offseason, as none apparently met his salary demands. The 2015 AL Cy Young winner went 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA last season, but he would still boost a Mets' rotation that needs depth now more than ever.
