The legal saga of New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker took another turn over the weekend, as it was reported that a Broward County warrant states that Baker had a direct message exchange with a man named Dominic Johnson on Instagram, the subject of that conversation intimating that Baker and Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar paid off four witnesses to recant stories around an alleged armed robbery Baker and Dunbar were involved in back in May.
News came via TMZ on Monday that Dunbar’s attorneys had withdrawn from the case, and later in the day, New York Daily News Giants beat reporter Pat Leonard joined WFAN’s Moose and Maggie Show with some potential further news on Baker’s status, at least in terms of the NFL.
“With the Giants, I’m told by multiple people in the organization not to expect him to be on the team much longer. It’s a foregone conclusion to many he will be cut,” Leonard said. “Evidence is mounting towards that inevitable conclusion that people are comfortable saying it behind the scenes.”
One of Baker’s attorneys, Patrick Patel, has been on record maintaining his client’s innocence, even telling the New York Post over the weekend that the new info will exonerate his client.
Per Leonard, though, regardless of what shakes out from the new developments, this could be a drawn-out situation that precludes Baker from being part of Giants camp – whether that’s due to legal delay or the team deciding to move on as he deals with it.
“Legally he faces eight count, and on the day he was released from jail, I reported that the Giants had told him to stay away until he had taken care of his legal matters,” Leonard said. “Not only is this headed in the wrong direction for him, but if this gets taken to trial, this matter might not get concluded anytime soon – and once we get to talking about Giants football, you just shouldn’t count on DeAndre Baker being a part of it.”
