There hasn’t been much of an update on the Domingo German situation since he was placed on administrative leave, until now.
German, who was being investigated for an alleged incident of domestic violence involving his girlfriend, made his last appearance of the season on September 18. He then missed the last few weeks of the regular season and the entirety of the Yankees’ run in the playoffs, in accordance with the joint MLB-MLBPA domestic violence policy.
According to Lindsey Adler of the Athletic, German won't appeal the suspension.
Sarah Stier/Getty Images Aaron Boone and company have had time to prepare for the possibility of being without German for a prolonged period of time. German was effectively the team’s ace for portions of last season, but Gerrit Cole’s addition to the rotation should lessen the blow of his absence a bit.
The Yankees released a statement after the ruling was announced.
"We remain steadfast in our support of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action taken regarding Domingo Germán. Domestic violence — in any form — is a gravely serious matter that affects every segment of our society. Major League Baseball has taken the lead in our industry to make domestic violence awareness and prevention a priority, and we will continue to back those efforts. We are encouraged by Domingo’s acceptance of his discipline, and we sincerely hope this indicates a commitment to making a meaningful and positive change in his personal conduct."
“As per the Basic Agreement's Joint Domestic Violence Policy, the Club will have no further comment on this matter and refer all questions to the Office of the Commissioner.”
German has spent the entirety of his big league career with the Yankees after he was initially signed as an international free agent by the Marlins back in 2009. The team will have a decision to make about his place going forward.
The 27-year-old went 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 24 starts and three relief appearances for New York this past season.
